PyData
PyData is an educational program of NumFOCUS, a non-profit foundation that supports open source libraries such as matplotlib, pandas and scikit-learn, and has affiliated libraries such as polars, cpython and marimo.
PyData promotes the discussion of best practices, new approaches and emerging technologies for data management, processing, analytics and visualization. PyData communities approach data science using many languages, including (but not limited to) Python, Julia and R.
There are 106 groups in 43 countries, with more than 180 thousand members in total. In Italy there are officially 3 active groups: in Milan, Rome and Venice.
PyData Venice
The Venice group is called PyData Venice: it has more than 1456 members and 28 events.
After attending yet another PyCon Italia, Fabio Lamanna and Omar Rampado decided to start this adventure: PyData Venice was born as PyData Veneto in September 2019. In the summer of 2023 Alessandra arrived, found the group paused for a year, and asked to carry it on.
How we organize our meetups
Alessandra introduced two talks per meetup, and streaming even when the meetup is in person.
A key point of the group is to keep an academic audience, besides industry practitioners: everything lies in keeping the technical level high. Two talks per meetup make this possible: speakers can have different backgrounds, with at least one academic or conceptually advanced talk.
Each meetup has short high-level talks, where speakers share goals, challenges, failures and achievements, and a discussion after each talk on the adopted solution, the choices, doubts and questions. Talks are given only by practitioners explaining to other practitioners what they have hands-on experience with, no fluff. Meetups are held in person and always also in streaming, then saved on YouTube for those who come later.
We talk about data science for data scientists, data engineers, ML engineers and AI engineers: from data ingestion, analysis, transformation and visualization to data management and sharing; from classical machine learning to deep learning and generative AI; from AIOps to MLOps, LLMOps and SLMOps. Talks can show code, notebooks, or concepts and best practices, and your thesis is a welcome topic too.

Other initiatives
Besides the meetups, we organize thematic workshops, both locally and at conferences together with PyCon Italia.
The year 2027 opens with the 30th event of the group: PyData Venice Day, the first one-day event.

Come organizziamo i meetup
